Indexes are invaluable for helping readers find information they need in printed and electronic materials, yet they too often receive the least amount of attention by the groups producing these materials. Sometimes the indexes are too short for what they go with. Sometimes they just don't exist. Most of the time, these groups are not given enough time to create an index, much less learn how to create one...and then create it.
We're the first to admit that if indexing isn't your cup of tea, creating an index falls somewhere between "downright intimidating" and "deadly dull." Call us crazy, but we love the art and the persnickety attention to detail that is involved with creating a good index.
