- serves as Vice President (in charge of public relations) for The Critter Connection, Inc., Connecticut's first and only rescue dedicated to guinea pigs
- writes a monthly column for Pets Press, a newspaper for Connecticut pet owners
Whitney is currently a senior member of the Society for Technical Communications (STC), and is a member of the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD), the Professional Communication Society of the IEEE's, and the National Association for Women Writers (NAWW). She was:
- Founding and Managing Editor of The Solitary Scrivener (for three years), the newsletter of the Lone Writer special-interest group of the STC
- Frequent contributor to Imprints, the newsletter of the Connecticut Chapter of the STC
- Two-time STC Annual Conference presenter
- Contributor to Intercom, the international member magazine for the STC
- Book reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, the journal for the IEEE's Professional Communication Society
